Big First Inning Sinks Boomers

TROIS-RIVIERES, Can. — Trois-Rivieres scored six runs rapidly in the bottom of the first inning and despite consistently having traffic on the bases, the Schaumburg Boomers hit into five double plays to suffer a 9-5 defeat in the series opener against the Aigles on Friday night.
Trois-Rivieres took the lead just three batters into the game and sent 10 men to the plate in the first inning outburst. After hitting into a double play to end each of the first three frames, the Boomers were finally able to get on the board in the top of the fourth against former big leaguer Jesen Therrien. Brett Milazzo and Will Prater both singled before Tyler Depreta-Johnson knocked home a run and Aaron Simmons plated another with a groundout. The Aigles gained more space behind a single run in the fourth and two in the fifth to lead 9-2.
Schaumburg did not go away, making noise in the eighth and ninth but could not tie the game. Seth Gray doubled home a run in the eighth before scoring on a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly from Evan Orzech in the ninth drove home Prater with the final tally.
Both teams amassed double-digit hits with the Boomers finishing with 10. Alec Craig totaled three hits and walked twice, reaching base in every at bat. Craig has reached base in all 18 games this season and owns an 11-game hitting streak. Prater also recorded multiple hits in the defeat. Brendan Knoll worked five innings and suffered the loss.
The Boomers (12-6) continue the final series of the Canada trip on Saturday night at 5:05pm Central against the Aigles. LHP John Wilson (2-0, 2.00) is scheduled to make his fourth start of the year for the Boomers against LHP Didier Vargas (1-1, 9.24). Schaumburg returns to Wintrust Field on June 4 for a three-game stint that begins with Educator Appreciation Night presented by Waterville Advisors.
