Boomers Rally to Sixth Straight
FLORENCE, Ky. — The Schaumburg Boomers plated 10 unanswered runs to pull away from the Florence Y’Alls and win a sixth straight contest by a 10-4 final in Kentucky on Saturday night.
Florence was able to take the early lead, scoring three runs with two outs in the bottom of the first inning after Schaumburg starter Jackson Hickert retired the first two batters. Hickert settled in and gave his teammates a chance to rally. Brett Milazzo started the rally by singling and stealing second in the second before scoring on an RBI single from Will Prater. The Boomers were able to tie the score with a two-run single from Prater in the fourth after a pair of steals helped put runners in scoring position.
Prater knocked in the go-ahead run in the sixth with his third hit of the night, also preceded by a pair of swipes as the Boomers broke their single season mark for steals set last year in just the 63rd game of the year. Prater would come in to score and make the count 5-3 when Kokko Figueiredo was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to force home the run. Figueiredo owns 11 RBIs in his six games with the team.
The Boomers continued to build the advantage with two in the seventh on a sacrifice fly from Kyle Fitzgerald and another RBI from Prater on a double. The first nine hits of the game for the Boomers were all singles. Three more came across in the eighth to make the score 10-3. All three were unearned following an error. Blake Berry doubled home a run and Fitzgerald added an RBI single.
Hickert worked six innings, retiring the final seven batters faced to earn his fourth win of the season. Milazzo finished with five hits and stole three bases to equal the single game team mark. Prater logged four hits and drove home five. The team stole eight bases to match the record set on June 27. Schaumburg has scored 10 or more runs on 10 or more hits in each of the past three contests.
The Boomers (38-24) conclude the brief road series on Sunday at 12:07 CST with RHP Shumpei Yoshikawa (2-1, 3.24) scheduled to start against RHP Bobby Brabrand (2-7, 6.68). The team, who has won five in a row for the first time this year, returns home on Monday for a huge single game with Gateway.
