Boomers Hold Off Florence

FLORENCE, Ky. — The Schaumburg Boomers captured the season series from the Florence Freedom by holding off the hosts 6-4 on Wednesday night.
Schaumburg (41-27) needed just three batters to take the lead. Karexon Sanchez led off with a walk and was sacrificed to second before scoring on a double from Frank Pfister. The Boomers tacked on two more in the second to open a 3-0 lead against Florence starter Sean Gregory (6-6), who suffered the loss despite working seven innings. Sanchez roped a two-out two-run double to center.
The three-run advantage was more than enough for Cody Griebling (3-1). Griebling worked his fourth quality start in as many appearances, pitching through seven innings to earn the victory. The rookie has worked into the seventh in every outing this year. Griebling allowed two runs as Florence posted single tallies in the second and third. Mike Valadez poked an RBI single in the sixth while Steve McQuail mashed his 12th homer of the year, a two-run blast in the seventh.
Florence (36-32) brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth, scoring twice, but Adam Tollefson recorded back-to-back strikeouts to close the win.
The roadtrip wraps up with the series finale tomorrow night at 6:05 p.m. RHP Robby Donovan (7-3, 3.48) will take the ball for the Boomers against RHP Brandon Mathes (1-0, 4.28).
