Homers Help Boomers Halt Slide

CRESTWOOD, Ill. — The Schaumburg Boomers belted three homers to put the brakes on a five-game losing streak and take down the West Division leading Windy City ThunderBolts 5-3 in the opener of a series on Sunday night.
Schaumburg has scored first in the last seven games, nabbing a 2-0 lead in the first on the strength of a two-run homer off the bat of Chad Mozingo, the second batter of the game. Windy City came back with two in the bottom of the frame but couldn’t do much else against Boomer starting pitcher Cody Griebling. Griebling tossed 6.2 innings to win for the first time as a professional, striking out a season high five.
Frank Pfister’s third inning sacrifice fly put Schaumburg ahead for good at 3-2, but Griebling worked magic in the sixth, working out a bases loaded no out jam to preserve the lead. Nick Kuroczko hit his first homer of the season in the seventh and Steve McQuail drilled an eighth inning solo homer. Patrick Mincey spun a 1-2-3 ninth to earn his 10th save of the season. Mozingo and J.B. Brown logged two hits apiece.
Schaumburg (34-24) continues the series tomorrow night at 7:05 p.m. RHP Robby Donovan (6-2, 3.71) is slated to return for the Boomers opposite RHP Stephen Sauer (5-4, 3.91) for Windy City.
