Gateway Hands Boomers Fourth Straight Defeat

SAUGET, Ill. — The Schaumburg Boomers jumped to a 2-0 lead but the Gateway Grizzlies scored eight unanswered runs against Schaumburg starter Cameron Roth and held off the Boomers in an 8-6 victory on Friday.
The Boomers came ready against Gateway starter Tim Brown, who started the All-Star Game for the West. Sean Mahley recorded a double for the Boomers in the second and scored on a fielder’s choice from Jereme Milons. Chad Mozingo’s solo homer in the third extended the lead to 2-0. The Grizzlies battered Roth for five runs on four hits in the bottom of the third, sending 10 men to the plate. Roth allowed two more in the fourth and one in the fifth, suffering the loss despite tossing six innings.
Nate Baumann hit a two-run homer in the eighth for Schaumburg who added a pair of unearned runs in the ninth and brought the tying run to the plate but couldn’t complete the comeback. The loss was the fourth in a row for the Boomers, the most this season.
The series concludes on Saturday with another 7:05 p.m. game. RHP Alex Rivers (1-1, 9.90) faces RHP Alex Kaminsky (5-4, 5.43).
