SCHAUMBURG, IL - The Schaumburg Boomers, presented by Wintrust Community Banks, are proud to announce that RHP Garrett Kelly has had his contract purchased by the Chicago Cubs.

Kelly, who pitched last season for the Frontier League Champion Boomers, appeared in 35 games as a reliever and finished the 2017 season with a 1-0 record with a 1.77 ERA and an outstanding 1.03 WHIP. Kelly also posted a 12.4 K/9IP as he struck out 56 batters in only 40.2 innings of work. The right hander was a solid back end reliever for the Boomers as he held opposing batters to only a .128 AVG. Kelly faced 166 batters in 2017 and allowed only 17 of those batters to get hits while also only walking 24.  

The Fresno, CA native attended Wake Forest University where he was a catcher before transitioning into a dual role his junior year. Eventually Kelly settled in as a pitcher only his senior year and developed into one of the team's most reliable set-up men as he struck out 71 batters in 70.2 innings. Following his senior year at Wake Forest he signed a minor-league contact with the Minnesota Twins 2016. While playing in the Gulf Coast League, Kelly appeared in 18 games finishing 9 of them and gathering 3 saves. He continued to dominant as a strikeout pitcher with the Twins as he posted a respectable 9.7 K/9IP striking out 29 batters in 27 innings of work to go with a 3.67 ERA in the Gulf Coast League 

The Boomers 2018 season, presented by Wintrust Community Banks, begins May 11. The Home Opener is Tuesday, May 15 vs. Southern Illinois.
