Boomers Outslug Joliet
SCHAUMBURG, IL —The Schaumburg Boomers, presented by Wintrust Community Banks, received a pinch-hit grand slam from James Keller in the bottom of the sixth to power a 10-8 decision over the Joliet Slammers before 7,284 fans on Saturday night.
The contest featured plenty of back and forth action. The Boomers opened a 2-0 lead in the first on a two-run single from John Holland. Joliet tied the game in the second before a leadoff homer from Sean Godfrey in the bottom of the frame made it 3-2 Schaumburg. The Slammers ripped off five unanswered runs to open a 7-3 edge, scoring four times in the fifth. After pulling within 7-5 with two fifth inning tallies, Keller entered as a pinch hitter with one out in the sixth and crushed the first pinch-hit homer in franchise history over the wall in left for his fourth homer of the year.
Conrad Wozniak started and threw 4.2 innings. Michael Wood picked up his second consecutive win in relief, allowing just an unearned tally in 1.2 innings, moving to 3-2 on the season. Jake Joyce struck out two in the ninth to earn his 11th save of the year. Both teams slugged 11 hits. Holland tallied three for Schaumburg with Kyle Ruchim and Nick Oddo adding two apiece.
The Boomers (49-22) are 27 games over the .500 mark for the first time in team history. The team leads the East Division and owns the best record in the league.
