Boomers Unable to Rally Past Southern Illinois
SCHAUMBURG, IL — The Schaumburg Boomers, presented by Wintrust Community Banks, had the tying run on base or at the plate in five consecutive innings but could not rally past the Southern Illinois Miners in a 6-5 defeat Wednesday night.
Southern Illinois jumped out to a 4-0 lead, chasing starter Michael Wood from the game in the third after scoring two runs in the second and again in the third. The Boomers bounced Southern Illinois starter Corey Sessions in the fifth. Sean Godfrey drew a two-out walk and scored on a Nick Oddo double off the wall. Jack Parenty singled home Oddo later in the frame as the Boomers stranded two.
Zack Weigel tripled in the sixth and scored on a wild pitch to bring Schaumburg within 4-3. Southern Illinois responded with two in the bottom of the sixth, fluffing the edge. Kyle Ruchim tripled home Parenty in the seventh and scored on a Josh Gardiner sacrifice fly. Schaumburg loaded the bases with no outs in the eighth but came away empty and struck out three times in the ninth against closer John Werner.
Both teams finished with nine hits in the contest. Schaumburg had not tripled since July 2, but mustered two in the loss. Ruchim, Opie Brodbeck and Oddo all finished with a pair of hits. Wood suffered the loss, working just 2.2 innings. Joe Hauser twirled 4.1 innings of relief in his Schaumburg debut.
