Boomers Sweep Gateway
SCHAUMBURG, IL —The Schaumburg Boomers, presented by Wintrust Community Banks, rallied from a three-run first inning deficit to sweep the Gateway Grizzlies with an 8-4 victory on Sunday afternoon.
Gateway strung together four consecutive hits to start the contest, building a 3-0 lead against starter Kagen Hopkins, who lasted only three innings. Ryan O’Malley drilled a two-run homer in the second and Josh Gardiner tied the game with an infield single to plate Kyle Ruchim in the third. Jack Parenty put Schaumburg ahead with a two-out single in the sixth. The Boomers padded the lead behind four seventh inning runs two of which scored on a single from James Keller.
Kit Fowler picked up his first professional win in relief, allowing just one hit in three innings. Rob McDonnell, Derek DeYoung and Garrett Kellyfinished out the victory. Gateway held an 11-9 advantage in hits. O’Malley and Gardiner each tallied two hits with Gardiner driving home a pair. Zack Weigel reached base four times, drawing three walks, and scored a run. Ruchim extended his hitting streak to 12 games with a ninth inning double.
The Boomers (40-19), who continue to lead the East Division with the best record in the league, hit the road for six games following a day off on Monday. The first destination will be three contests at Southern Illinois starting at 7:05 p.m. on Tuesday. RHP Conrad Wozniak (1-1, 3.31) takes the ball in the opener.
